A Picture A Day (Week 1)

On July 21st (2 pm-4 pm), I had attended the Drawing Fundamentals class. We were given a task to draw lines using straw, stick and ink. I would had been lying if I said I wasn't feeling uncertain about this. Drawing without the brush but the straw and stick? Well. It wouldn't be easy to say the least for it was my first time to try anything like this. The thought scared me momentarily but the fear was gone as quickly as it had come. Never try never know! I reminded myself.

 Straw and ink

As I can already foresee, I had trouble drawing most likely due to the amount of concentration and control required. I had no idea what to expect and fumbled the straw and stick, attempting to improvise something by using the lines. To my own surprise, I soon found myself indulging in the process, thrilled even.

This is my first drawing.

Trees and clouds were created using the lines.

I thought to myself that the drawing was generally good but some adjustments were needed as the drawing was messy and dirty. I was still unable to have complete control over the straw and stick so the lines didn't come out as nicely as I hoped.

The lecturer then proceeded to show us some completed works from the other classmates. I was immediately captivated by their interesting ideas. The lines had been used to create a wide variety type of objects ranging from animals and plants to comic characters such as Batman and Joker. To say I was impressed was an understatement.

That got me wondering what are the attractive factors of their works? Where do their ideas come from? Why it can be done so differently? How can I brought about an improvement?

Too many question marks had appeared in my mind, I started to analyze and came to a discovery. To put it simply, I must present my works in a more creative way. But how? And where do I get the ideas?

Below are some STEPS and SOLUTION that I finally figure out.

1. I searched for "ink drawings" on Google for the use of reference.

2. Came up with satisfying ideas and employed in the work.
3. Drawing skill was (hopefully) perfected by practicing many times

4. Had unwavering confidence and drew with no hesitation
5. Most importantly, had fun drawing!!!

Progressing...

Skull with fire

A woman crying in the rain

Panda in bamboo forest

Windmill

Tears

I couldn't help but notice the mistake made had lessen magnificently and the lines were starting to get smoother. The drawings also showed specific and obvious themes. However the illustrations still remained untidy and disordered. Moreover, I'd admitted the works were gloomy.

These are my final drawings.

Jellyfish

Octopus

Flowers

IMPROVEMENTS:
1. The appearance became neat and clean.
2. The lines were smooth.
3. The theme portrayed were clear and distinct.
4. My drawings expressed interesting ideas.

After accomplishing the task, I came to realize that practice makes perfect. I also understood the importance to expose myself to more wonderful works to broaden my own view. I looked forward to explore inspiring things and obtain fascinating ideas which can be applied in my future works. Last but not least, Think Out of The Box!
